From the Sidewalk to Your Shirts

Chalk is, by its nature, doomed from the start. No matter how charming, enlightening or just plain funny a chalk drawing is, it will last longer in your memory than it will on the sidewalk. And maybe that’s part of the charm, knowing that this brand of art is more about the moment of experiencing it than about how it stands up to the test of time.

It’s interesting to see chalk art make the leap from sidewalk to shirt, mainly because the medium is so different. With a shirt, you promote and exemplify the message instead of just passing it by. That message that used to be washed away by wind or storms now lives a much longer (and maybe more meaningful) life on cotton.

The great thing about Better Bees Than Bears is how well the drawings work in both mediums. The fresh cartooned characters and the enigmatic slogans are deeply appealing, with a sort of retro vibe that makes it feel timeless. Two chalk drawings have made the leap to cotton so far (Thanks A Lot You Guys and I’ll Try Not To Wake You) but I hope a lot more are on the way.
