Substratum Apparel: Shirts With Layers
Everything worth delving into has layers. T-shirts are no different, and the best designs often have a few levels of meaning to sort through and enough possible interpretations to make any wearer feel like it was made just for them.
Substratum Apparel does layers well, both in terms of meaning and more literally in the way their elements tend to overlap and collide to form a greater whole. Some of the thematic depth comes from their approach, which involves a new theme behind the collection each season. So far, themes such as Land and Sea and Seven Deadly Sins have been explored.
I’m especially drawn to their shirt The Blooms are After You, which shows jellyfish layered over a woodgrain pattern. That moment where the woodgrain seems to become a stream is beautiful, a merging of natural imagery that is both attractive and thought provoking.

These are awesome designs. I love the fish/tree one. It looks like this company really does do layers well. I’m looking forward to seeing what else they come up with.
