Hugsmugglers Makes the Old New Again

A lot of clothing lines make reference to the trappings of modern pop culture, but very few of them do it with such finesse that it crosses over into the world of art. That Hugsmugglers has been able to elevate itself to that level is a testament to artist Brandon Dunlap, whose work graces these shirts.

Music and cinema are the major influences here, often updating classical imagery with more contemporary elements (such as with Boom Chicka Boom Box and Rhino Radio). It’s a cool way to show that music today is linked to what was done in the past. The Tusken Raider tee takes another tactic, blowing up the face of the character which gives it an iconic, Che-like feel. The effect is more like a propaganda poster than a traditional movie reference.

If the style looks familiar, it’s not a coincidence. Dunlap’s work is also featured at Resist Today, where his pieces can be found on tees, bags, pillows and more.
