There’s only one holiday that every geek in this world will be celebrating in their geek house this year: Spocktoberfest. We’re putting on the ears and splitting our fingers all day in honor of First Officer Spock from Star Trek. Although our friend Mr. Spock comes from the far away planet of Vulcan, he enjoys the celebrations of Oktoberfest taught to him by his best Earthling friend Captain Kirk. The only thing cooler than Oktoberfest, is Oktoberfest IN SPACE.
Oktoberfest is an annual beer festival held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany which runs for 16-18 days from late September to first weekend in October. It is considered to be the world’s largest beer festival. Locally the festival is known as “die Wiesn”. The party attracts over 6 million people every year who consume 1.5 million gallons of beer, 200,000 pairs of pork sausage, and 480,000 spit-roasted chickens during the two-week extravaganza.
While the event reinforces stereotypical images of beer-loving, meat-loving Germans dressed in dirndls and lederhosen, visitors to the annual event come from all over the world. The 2012 Oktoberfest beer festival opened on Saturday, 22nd September 2012 in Germany as Munich’s mayor tapped the first keg to kick off the 16-day Oktoberfest. With only two blows of his hammer and a cry of “O’zapft is” — “It’s Tapped” — Mayor Christian Ude inserted the tap into the first keg, opening the 179th Oktoberfest to the cheering of thousands who were waiting to be served their first beer. Drink lots and prosper!
Seriously dude, drink responsibly.
