On January 12, 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake, the country’s most severe earthquake in over 200 years. The epicenter of the quake was just outside the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The capital city was devastated.
It has now been weeks since the devastating quake. The latest estimate offered by the European Union citing Haitian authorities stands at 200,000 people dead and many more injured. This number is comparable in scale to the 2004 Asian tsunami, which was estimated at 230,000 people dead.
Many earthquake victims in Haiti are still dying due to the lack of medical attention, food and basic sanitary conditions. There are now reports of erupting violence and an imminent public health disaster, which might make the death toll climb even further.
