Woody Woodpecker was a brash, high-strung woodpecker whose trademark was his staccato laugh, “ha-ha-ha-HA-ha”. The character first appeared in the 1940 and his theme song was introduced in 1947 and was nominated for an Oscar for best song, the only song from a short film ever to be nominated in the category. Woody was by far the most politically incorrect and audacious character of his time. In an era when cartoons were trying to promote a positive message or somehow prove educational, Woody was breaking taboos left and right. While other cartoons were trying to do the right thing, Woody was joking, fighting, stealing, and antagonizing.
Woody is no-doubt legendary, that’s why, Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-based animation house behind Despicable Me and The Lorax, is working on a feature project centering on the venerable and precociously noisy bird. Woody Woodpecker could be heading to the big screen for the first time in decades. Celebrate it with wearing this shirt on premiere time!
